Description
These homemade garlic parmesan breadsticks are a quick, pantry-friendly comfort food that takes just 30 minutes from start to finish. With simple ingredients like flour, butter, garlic, and Parmesan, they offer a restaurant-quality taste perfect for weeknight dinners.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (180ml) hot water (105-110°F)
- 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted
- 4–6 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup (50g) freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small saucepan or microwave-safe cup, combine hot water and sugar. Sprinkle yeast on top and stir gently. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy and bubbly.
- Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well and pour in the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon or hand until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add small amounts of flour or water if needed to achieve a soft, slightly tacky consistency.
- First rise: Lightly oil the bowl, place dough inside, turn to coat, and cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm, draft-free spot for 30 minutes until doubled in size.
- Shape the breadsticks: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 13×9 inch baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough gently and roll into a 12×10 inch rectangle. Cut into 1-inch wide strips (about 10-12 strips) and place on the baking sheet with space between them.
- Make the garlic butter: While dough rests, melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Add minced garlic, dried parsley, and red pepper flakes. Stir for about 30 seconds until fragrant, ensuring the garlic does not brown.
- Brush and bake: Brush the garlic butter generously over each breadstick. Sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Serve: Let cool for 2 minutes. Serve warm with marinara sauce for dipping or alongside pasta.
Notes
Ensure yeast is fresh and water is between 105-110°F for proper activation. Do not skip kneading to develop gluten for a chewy texture. Use freshly grated Parmesan for better melting. If garlic browns, it will taste bitter. For leftovers, reheat in an oven or toaster oven at 350°F for 5-7 minutes to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving if possible.
